Meta Engineering to help build the Mexico-Toluca Intercity Train

12th January 2021

Meta Engineering is taking part in the track supervision, installations, rolling stock and ISA certification for the Mexico-Toluca Intercity Train. This extensive infrastructure consists of 57.70 kilometres, 5 stations and 2 termini, which will connect the Toluca metropolitan area to Mexico City, and is part of the Mexican Government’s National Infrastructure Plan.

The train has a design speed of up to 160 kilometres/hour, international rail width and dedicated passenger traffic, and a journey time of 39 minutes, representing a commercial speed of 90 km/h. This travel time gives it a competitive edge over the road, which normally takes 55 minutes by car and 2 and a half hours by bus.

The new network is being developed in an environment where the topographical and environmental difficulties are considerable, which has led to the design of a route in which tunnels and viaducts account for 92% of the route. Throughout its route, there are about 49 kilometres of viaducts in total and a 4.7 kilometre-long twin-tube tunnel has been planned that will be connected to cross holes every 240 metres.

Once in operation, the new train will carry more than 300,000 passengers every day, although demand is expected to grow up to 500,000 passengers per day by 2047.

This new passenger rail service will have a positive impact on the environment and mobility by reducing the number of accidents and significantly reducing travel times for its users, as well as generating 17,500 direct jobs and 35,000 indirect jobs over the course of its construction.
