Meta Engineering and AudingMex, on the short list of bidders for the Quito Metro development project

24th February 2021

The consortium formed by Meta Engineering, its Mexican subsidiary AudingMex and Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya has been short-listed to provide consultancy services for the Technical Structuring of the Operation and Maintenance of the First Line in Quito’s Metro, Ecuador’s first metro system.

Quito Metropolitan District Municipality has short-listed the bid under the Quality and Cost Based Selection process, using the Extended Technical Proposal (ETP) format, along with other prestigious bidders such as Metro de Santiago, Metro de Medellín and Metro de São Paulo.

Construction work on the Quito Metro began in 2017, and it is expected to be operational by the end of 2021. There will be a single 22-kilometre line, with 15 operational stations and 5 reserve ones with accessibility for all. The line will run from Quitumbe, in the south of the capital, to El Labrador, at the southern end of the current Bicentennial Park, located in the north of the city.

The metro line is planned to serve as the backbone of Quito’s Integrated Mass Transport System (SITM-Q), which is made up of the Metro, the Metrobus-Q and the bus network, enabling the city to be crossed from end to end in just 34 minutes.

Such new infrastructure will make a decisive contribution to the urban, social and economic integration of the peripheral areas. It will also help to reduce traffic congestion, which currently accounts for more than 450,000 vehicles per day, and to reduce the high levels of environmental pollution caused by road traffic.
